Monthly road crash statistics update - February 2016

The data presented here are provisional. Crash data as at 7th March 2016.

  • Thirty-three people died on New Zealand roads in February. This is 1 more than February 2015 and 10 more than the average February road toll for the last five years.Graph showing February road deaths

  • To the end of February this year 65 people have died on New Zealand roads. This is 10 more than at the same time last year.

  • In the 12 months to the end of February 2016, 330 people died on our roads. This is 22 more than the 12 months to the end of February 2015.
  • During February, 17 of the deaths were car or van drivers, 9 were passengers, 5 were motorcyclists, 1 was a truck driver and 1 was a cyclist.

  • Twenty-three of the 33 deaths were in open road crashes. Eleven were in head-on crashes, 9 were in single vehicle crashes in which a driver lost control of the vehicle or ran off the road, 4 were in overtaking crashes, 4 were in collisions with an obstruction (such as a parked vehicle) and 4 were in intersection collisions.

  • Of the 27 vehicle occupants who died, 7 were not restrained at the time of the crash.

Deaths are for the 12 months to the end of February 2016. Reported injuries are for the 12 months to the end of September 2015.

Note: Preliminary fatal crash reports are submitted within 24 hours of a crash related death. Full injury crash reports are submitted only after the crash investigations are completed, so there is a lag in the reporting of injury crashes.

Graph showing casualties and vehicle fleet compared to 1990Since 1990 the number of vehicles on the road has increased by 69 percent while Police reported injuries have dropped by 27 percent, road deaths have dropped by 56 percent and the number of days spent in hospital as a result of road crashes has dropped by 60 percent.
