Monthly road crash statistics update - March 2017

The data presented here are provisional. Crash data as at 5th April 2017.

  • Thirty people died on New Zealand roads in March. This is 5 more than March 2016 and is 4 more than the average March road toll for the last five years.Graph showing March deaths

  • To the end of March this year, 90 people have died on New Zealand roads. This is 1 more than at the same time last year.

  • In the 12 months to the end of March 2017, 329 people died on our roads. This is 2 more than the 12 months to the end of March 2016.
  • During March, 15 of the deaths were car or van drivers, 9 were car or van passengers, 4 were pedestrians, 1 was a motorcyclist and 1 was a cyclist.

  • Twenty-four of the 30 deaths were in open road crashes. Fourteen were in head-on collisions and 8 were in single vehicle crashes in which a driver lost control of the vehicle or ran off the road.

  • Thirteen of the 30 deaths were in collisions involving a truck.

  • Of the 24 vehicle occupants who died, 7 were not restrained at the time of the crash.

Deaths are for the 12 months to the end of March 2017. Reported injuries are for the 12 months to the end of October 2016.

Note: Preliminary fatal crash reports are submitted within 24 hours of a crash related death. Full injury crash reports are submitted only after the crash investigations are completed, so there is a lag in the reporting of injury crashes.

Graph showing casualties and vehicle fleet compared to 1990Since 1990 the number of vehicles on the road has increased by 77 percent while Police reported injuries have dropped by 28 percent, road deaths have dropped by 57 percent and the number of days spent in hospital as a result of road crashes has dropped by 55 percent.
