Holiday road toll - Queen's Birthday

2016

The official holiday period for Queen's Birthday Weekend for 2016 beganwill begin at 4pm Friday 3 June and endedend at 6am Tuesday 7 June.

Provisional road toll: Over Queen’s Birthday weekend 2016 there were 8 fatal crashes resulting in 11 deaths.

 The 11 deaths were:

  • 6 drivers
  • 3 passengers
  • 2 motor cycle rider

 Six of the fatal crashes reported during the weekend occurred on the open road.

2015

The official holiday period for Queen's Birthday Weekend for 2015 began at 4pm Friday 29 May and ended at 6am Tuesday 2 June.

Over Queen’s Birthday weekend 2015 there were 5 fatal crashes and 96 reported injury crashes. These crashes resulted in 5 deaths, 28 serious injuries and 109 minor injuries.

The 5 deaths included:

  • 3 drivers
  • 1 passenger
  • 1 motorcycle pillion passenger

Over half (56%) of the fatal and injury crashes reported during the weekend occurred on the open road.

Common types of crashes:

  • 52% of crashes were single vehicle crashes in which a driver lost control or ran off the road
  • 19% were intersection collisions
  • 16% were rear end crashes or collisions with obstructions (such as parked vehicles)

The most common driver factors contributing to crashes:

  • losing control (41% of crashes)
  • travelling too fast for conditions (29%)
  • alcohol (23%)
  • inattention (20%)
  • failing to give way (15%)
  • fatigue (8%)

2014

The official holiday period for Queen's Birthday Weekend for 2014 began at 4pm Friday 30 May and ended at 6am Tuesday 3 June.

During Queen’s Birthday weekend 2014 there were 4 fatal crashes and 86 reported injury crashes. These crashes resulted in 6 deaths, 24 serious injuries and 92 minor injuries.

The 6 deaths included:

  • 4 passengers
  • 1 driver
  • 1 pedestrian

Forty-four percent of the fatal and injury crashes reported during the weekend occurred on the open road.

Common types of crashes:

  • 51% of crashes were single vehicle crashes in which a driver lost control or ran off the road
  • 19% were intersection collisions
  • 11% were rear end crashes or collisions with obstructions (such as parked vehicles)

The most common driver factors contributing to crashes:

  • losing control (39% of crashes)
  • inattention (20%)
  • failing to give way (19%)
  • travelling too fast for conditions (18%)
  • alcohol (16%)
  • fatigue (9%)

Historical

The road toll of zero in 2013 is the lowest for the Queen's Birthday holiday weekend. The previous lowest was the 1 death recorded in 2011. The highest number killed is 24 which was recorded in 1973.
