Overseas drivers in crashes – matching crash data to visitor arrival data
The purpose of this project is to see what insights can be gained by combining data from the NZ Transport Agency’s Crash Analysis System (CAS), with visitor arrivals and departures records from Customs, supplied by Statistics NZ.
A particular focus is to see how many drivers crash shortly after their arrival in the country, when travel fatigue may be an issue.
This is a joint project:
- The Transport Agency extracted data on overseas licence holders involved in crashes from CAS.
- These driver records were matched with visitor arrivals and departures data by Statistics NZ.
- The Transport Agency and the Ministry of Transport analysed the anonymised, matched records in the Statistics NZ Secure Datalab facility.
